The Essentials of Slow Living in a Tiny, Seaside Fishing Village in Florida

Florida Lifestyle and Slow Living, Kinfolk Style in Nature With Plants
In case you can't tell, I am homesick for Florida.  I am visiting Rhode Island for the summer, but will soon be going back to my home sweet home that's a mere hop, skip, and jump from the ocean.  You can read about it in this post.  The essentials of slow living in a tiny, seaside fishing village in Florida is a laid-back Florida lifestyle and days filled with hiking adventures, talking to my pet plants, and spending time with the ones I love.

It's funny how time away from home makes the heart grow fonder.  I've kind of always had my heart in two places at the same time.  I dream of living in a cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina while spending a big chunk of my time in sunny, tropical Florida too.  To be clear, I still want that and believe with all of my heart my wish will come true.

Florida is where I imagine I'll spend most of my time, the larger part of the year.  I love it.  I once had a guy friend who told me that I was the queen of Florida.  It went straight to my head because I pride myself on being a local and knowing every plant, flower, and field biology there is when it comes to Florida wildlife.

When I get back home, I plan on taking a day and reshooting some pictures of small-town Florida that I live in.  It's a tiny little enclave by the sea.  I have a lot of old photographs of Ozona, Florida where I live, but I'd really like to get my hands dirty and do a true photoshoot of the town.  I'd like to write an entire post on the cute little town that I live in.

You're probably wondering: What's so great about a small town with one traffic light?  There's not only a great deal of history in Ozona, but there's magic in the air!  On the weekends it can be quite festive and has quite the nightlife for a tiny little hamlet.  There's a buzz in the air as you walk at night towards downtown where the restaurants are.  There's music wafting through the air and the smell of jasmine in bloom in spring.

During the daytime hours, like magic, the town changes again.  Weekends are for antique cars strolling down the road without care while families head to yard sales and do some antiquing.  For the nature-inspired folks, there's plenty to do, whether it be taking your boat out on the water at one of the many local marinas or getting close to mother nature in a glass-bottomed kayak.

It's just a wonderful, magical place to live and one of my favorite things about it is slow living the Florida lifestyle.  Life moves slowly in Florida and the atmosphere is friendly and laidback for the most part.  Plus, I live in a safe haven.  I live in a place where I feel safe to keep my doors unlocked during the day and safe to walk the roads after dark.  Not many people can say that.

I guess you can say, I'm in love with where I live.  I heart it.  I've lived in both good and bad places in Florida, but this is the safest I've ever felt.  Not only safe but warm and loved.  Ozona is a family town with festivals, golf cart parades, and a town hall.  I even love that we have fickle seasons that are different from the rest of the country.  You can read more about the changing seasons of Florida in "A Handmade Girls Unique Collection: The Moment Collector."

Having this experience spending my summer vacation in New England has only brought me closer to Florida and the woman that I want to be.  I believe in living a slow life.  I believe in drinking in the moment while still relishing the past.  There's nothing I hate more than a fast-paced world and in Florida, I can leave it all behind.  I'm not saying that everyone's life is like that, only that I make it a point for mine to be.

I was practicing kinfolk style, slow living long before it was Instagram-worthy.  Long before it was a trend, I knew that's how I wanted life to be.  I don't thrive on chaos.  I like long, slow Florida summers laying in the green grass reading a book as the sprinkler sprinkles cool water over me with my feet in the air crossed.

Living in Ozona has taught me that small-town charm still exists.  I've been very lucky and fortunate to have lived in two small towns in Florida by the sea.  Ozona just happens to be my favorite.  There are wildness and freedom to the town that tells a story about the people who live there.

There are mansions that reside right next to old sea shacks that have been there since the humble beginnings of the community as a fishing camp.  There are manicured lawns next to wildly overgrown lawns with tall grass and butterflies.  It's these essential differences that make the town what it is today.

It's a town full of eclectic people with artsy tastes.  We even have a wildly popular vegan pizza joint in town that has the best pizza on the face of the planet!  There are people like me that run the gamut with a yoga and wellness center featured at the heart of the town with a cute little vegan cafe.

Some businesses are run right from their cute little Key West style homes.  This vast variety is what makes the town deliciously special and unique.  Honestly, for every season of life, there's something to celebrate in Ozona.

Getting back to Florida is going to feel good and different.  With the exception of that time I lived in Sedona, Arizona for two and a half months in 2014, I haven't been away from Florida this long since I lived here at the young and innocent age of eighteen.  Even though this has been a rocky stretch for me vacationing in Rhode Island, I'm still glad I did it.

You know why?  Because I learned something about myself.  I learned who I am and got clear on what I want.  I learned that if I spend the rest of my life in my tiny, seaside fishing village I'd be okay with that.  There are worse places I could end up or be.

I learned that I like my Florida lifestyle and that a slower lifestyle is essential for me.  I mean, I live a truly magical life!  I wake up every day with clear intentions ready to greet the sun as I practice sun salutations.  Then, I spend an hour or so hiking in the woodland or practicing nature photography.  I do my work throughout the day when I feel inspired.

I've really come to appreciate all that I have and I can't wait to get back and embrace the next step in my life.  But, for now, I'll just be here sitting at my desk dreaming of Florida, and overlooking the woodland turkeys that gather in the back of my Rhode Island getaway.  I guess I can live with that :)
