Why I Live a Plant-Based Lifestyle Versus Vegan Label

I wanted to write about why I live a plant-based lifestyle versus the vegan label because it's something near and dear to my heart.  For more on the vegan lifestyle, you might like to download my vegan starter kit!

Nowadays, there are many different labels being thrown around when it comes to a plant-eating diet. In some ways that's good, because labels allow you to discern if something is vegan or gluten-free.

However, when it comes to strict labels like veganism, I've opted for a more relaxed label.  I eat a plant-based diet.  This means that I go light on processed foods and I eat pure, unprocessed foods.

But, I also live a plant-based lifestyle.  What this means is that I'm basically a vegan, but I leave a little wiggle room for if I screw up.

By screw up, I mean not adhere to the vegan label perfectly.  For example, I accidentally eat something with dairy in it.  Or, I purposely ingest something with dairy in it.

Of course, I try to steer clear of dairy and I'm 100% meat-free, but there are times there are going to be slip-ups.   We don't go out of our way to find trouble, but sometimes trouble finds us.  That type of thing.

However, being vegan is a strict label.  I should know.  I was a vegan for five years.  That type of commitment is more than a passing thing.

I relaxed my labels a bit because the vegan label felt too restricting for me.  It made me feel like I had to be perfect all the time, and it turns out, I do better living the vegan lifestyle without the label.

For some hardcore vegans, the label keeps them in place so it works well for them.  For me, I do better without a vegan label in place.

Sure, I like it at the grocery store for choosing plant-based meals, but I like it less in my daily life.  This is a personal choice that I made for myself, not as a way to knock the vegan lifestyle (I'm living it so why would I knock it?), but as a way to not have to come up for explanations as to why I'm not 100% perfect all the time.

That's the thing:  I pretty much live a vegan lifestyle.  All of my ethics and values align with veganism.  The way I live my life reflects a vegan lifestyle.

I just prefer the plant-based label because it's less restricting.  It doesn't call for me to be perfect.  I like the freedom of feeling like it's okay to be a wabi-sabi style vegan.

Labels are great in so many ways, as they guide us in making thoughtful purchases at the grocery store or vegetable stand.  But, when it comes to personal development, you get to choose how you want to live your life.
