How to Be a Happy, Healthy Blogger and Safeguard Your Health

One of the things that I really want to do with this blog, is to address how to have a healthy, happy blog life!  When you blog for a living, you are making a life for yourself, and the thing is, you never know what kind of life that's going to be.  As someone who has been blogging for the past seven years, I quickly learned that the blog life is different than almost any other life out there.  You have to be more careful about safeguarding your health.

When you tell people what your occupation is, oftentimes, the person gets a look on their face, or generally treat it as if it were a hobby.  For some people, it is a hobby, while many of us wish to make it into our dream job.  Some of us bloggers have already established themselves in the blogosphere, and now they work to maintain a fresh take on their blogs.

It's an ongoing learning experience that never stops.  In a way, we don't want it to, do we?  If the blogging community came to a sudden halt, I think many of us would be taken aback.  Therefore, we have to keep challenging ourselves and making way for new technology and blogging trends. Blogging is changing, faster than we are, and this is all amazingly wonderful!

There's just one little catch!  It takes a toll on us sometimes.  In order to live our best blog life, we have to constantly be in a state of self-help and self-improvement.  It's imperative that we take care of ourselves if we're going to work from home, and blogging is our bread and butter.  So, how do we do that?  When things are always in a state of flux, how do we keep sane?  Let's take a look at that, shall we?

Here are some of the things that I do to ensure my health and safety as a wellness blogger.  It varies, depending on my the day, my mood, and if I were able to sleep the night before.  One of the things that keep me up at night is that my mind gets overactive at bedtime.  I tend to come up with lightbulb ideas and sparkling insights right as I am trying to fall asleep, so clearly, this is one of the things I need to work on to protect my health.

Just Blog Things:
  • I practice yoga 4 to 5 days a week.  If I'm busy, I even try to get in a quick yoga cardio session.  I'm also working toward becoming a certified yoga instructor to increase my practice and to create financial stability.  This way, I always have something to fall back on.
  • I go hiking at least 5 to 6 days out of the week.  Being in nature heals me through earthing energy, which you can read about here.  It not only keeps me in physical shape, but it restores the delicate balance of my mindset.
  • I eat a plant-based diet. This means eating high-vibration foods that are organic and have not been tampered with.
  • I take breaks.  You'd be surprised how much taking a break helps.
  • I'm gentle on myself on Monday mornings.  My ritual for Mondays is to count it as an extended weekend.
  • I stretch.  This goes back to my yoga practice.  Taking breaks and stretching is really helpful when sitting at a desk all day.  That's why I get up a lot and leave for a while if I need to.
  • I do photoshoots in the woodland to ground my energy.  A fact which you can read up on here.

How to Be a Healthy, Happy Blogger and Safeguard Your Health

When you make the decision to become a blogger, you're making a commitment.  If you're anything like me, you might jump in headfirst, and damn the consequences later.  What you may not realize is, how much work goes into blogging to make it look seamless!

Blogging isn't just a blog, it's a lifestyle!  It's a way of life that includes wearing multiple hats, in multi-tasking ways.  As a blogger, you're a photographer, a social media coordinator, and a brand ambassador.  You do everything behind-the-scenes to create top-notch, quality content.

Let's face it, sometimes you don't get paid for it, or even if you do, it's not as much as you are worth. This is an everyday story in the world of blogging.  As bloggers, how can we be healthier and happier in our blog lives?  The number one thing I can recommend is to safeguard your health.  Make it number one on your list of priorities.  It is the reason why so many bloggers get burned out so quickly.

It is also one of the reasons I started this blog.  Like I said before, blogging is a way of life.  When you take good care of yourself, I believe that bleeds into your business.  Natural health is a huge part of my everyday life, and I believe it can work as a partner with every blogger out there.

Safeguard Your Health

Make a priority list right now.  Try to narrow it down to five priorities if you can.  At the top of the list, make safeguarding your health, your number one priority.

Now, make a plan of action, on how you plan to do that.

To help you out, here's what I do:
  • I wake up early in the morning, usually around 6:30am, and I write letters to God, the angels, and spirit helpers as part of my morning ritual.  I burn the letters afterward, over the sink.
  • I usually drink my green tea or coffee (black) while I write my letters, then I turn to write a quick gratitude list and affirmations.  I used to hate affirmations until I found some that resonated with me.  I'll share them at the end of this post.
  • I also try to squeeze in 5-10 minutes of meditation every day, wherever I can.  Lately, I save it for the end of my workout, or for drifting off to sleep.  Meditation keeps your mind calm and receptive to new ideas, which is perfect for any blogger or a small business owner.
  • I eat healthfully.  Yes, I have my binge days like all people do, but for the most part, eating veggies, nuts, and fruits are my faithful eating style.  I'm a vegan.
  • I try to get a good night's rest every night.  I admit, sometimes, usually, at least once a week, I struggle with this one.  My mind tends to start worrying as I drift off to sleep.  If you can sleep through, then you should.  Sleep is so good for you!
  • I take breaks from the computer and stretch my muscles out.
  • I use crystals for energy healing.  You can read about crystals here.
  • I don't work in the evenings or on the weekends as a rule of thumb.  As bloggers, we make our own schedule, and we can sometimes put in too many hours.  I give myself time off as if I had a regular job.
  • I already mentioned this, but I practice yoga, and I cannot recommend this enough!  Yoga will massage your body from the inside and out, and work out all those tired muscles and fatigued mind, from sitting at a desk.
  • I always take a lunch break and watch a show or something while I eat.  I love to catch the latest episode of The Handmaid's Tale or The Bachelor when it's on the air.
  • I visualize the success I want.  I find doing this to be fun because, in your imagination, you can do and be anything!

Blogging Healthcare

While most of the time, I prefer to use natural health as my healing modality, I also believe in getting regular checkups and teeth cleanings.

One thing I want you to consider is making sure you have some kind of healthcare coverage as a blogger.  IWWG (International Women's Writing Guild), has a place to signup for coverage when you become a member.

If you are in a situation similar to mine, where you are gaining marketable skills, and working freelance jobs, you may qualify for getting medical in your state.  It's better to have health coverage if you are going to move forward with the business of blogging.  Take care of yourself!

Safeguard Your Finances

I didn't do this, in the beginning, seven years ago, when I quit my full-time, hourly job to become a writer.  I made a lot of poor financial decisions in the beginning, and that's something I am still paying for.

How do you safeguard your finances?  Since there's a direct link, between your finances and health, I'd say have one or two backup jobs.  You can work from home if need be, but this way you always have an income coming in.

Financial Tips For Blogging

  • Create multiple streams of income.  For example, create a sponsorship program, a shop full of digital downloads (passive), and have a closet sale on eBay.
  • Always have a passive income, whether it be affiliate ads or instant digital downloads that are printable.
  • Always have jobs or opportunities at your fingertips.  Keep em' coming!  Always keeping jobs lined up is smart and efficient.
  • Do freelance work.  If you have marketable skills as a blogger, virtual assistant, or a social media coordinator (which you undoubtedly will), you are more likely to get some really great freelance jobs.  This will keep you financially secure and stable, while you are building your blog biz!

Loneliness and Blogging

Unless you are in a blogging partnership of some sort, you most likely work alone from home.  This can lead to loneliness and melancholy if you're not careful.  Trust me, I've been there!

Try to get out and do something that doesn't revolve around your blog live every day.  Something that is just for you and something that is for someone else.  These are the types of things that make you feel better overall.

It's easy to feel isolated when starting an online business, but it's really up to you to keep your connections alive.  If you can't reach out to people nearby, try to make online friends.  I've made friends with several people through blogging.  It's nice to share a common bond!

I promised that I would share my affirmations at the end.  The key to affirmations, based on my personal experience, is finding the ones that resonate with you!  For whatever reason, these affirmations work wonders for me.
  • I am making a conscious decision to be happy today
  • I am making a conscious choice to make money doing what I love today
  • I am making a conscious decision to be positive and thankful today
  • I am making a conscious choice to workout today
  • I am making a conscious choice to eat healthy today
  • I am making a conscious decision "not" to binge eat today
  • I am making a conscious decision to be productive today
  • I am making a conscious choice to love myself today

How to Have a Healthy, Happy Blog Life!

Blogging, like anything else in life, is what you make of it.  You can have a healthy, happy blog life, but it all starts with you!

Think about how different your life is now that you're blogging.  You've created a small online world.
You are in business for yourself.  You most likely work from home and have a different life from your friends and former co-workers.  That's okay.  It's an adjustment.

Think of all the significant changes you've made.  Have you made friends in the blogging community?  Do you now see yourself in a different light?  If you do, these are all very good thing!
